After the behind-the-scenes scandal involving head coach Ime Udoka unfolded, the Boston Celtics parted ways with the promising young coach and moved forward with Joe Mazzulla instead.
With Udoka coming off an appearance in the NBA Finals, Mazzulla had some big shoes to fill, with virtually no one giving him any chance of retaining the job if he could not repeat what Udoka was able to accomplish as the head coach.
Obviously, the odds were stacked against Mazzulla keeping his job on a long-term basis, with the Celtics being a legitimate NBA title contender with high expectations and two of the best players in the league leading the way in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Despite facing long odds, Mazzulla got the Celtics within one win of returning to the Finals and proved his worth as a head coach, which he topped this season by getting back to the Finals and sporting a 3-0 series lead against the Dallas Mavericks ahead of Game 4.
With Mazzulla winning over the franchise’s brass and the players, Sam Hauser was asked about his favorite quote from his head coach, via Celtics on CLNS.

With the Celtics one win away from winning it all, Mazzulla is on the cusp of making history, as the storied franchise will officially lead the league in titles won, breaking the tie with the arch-rival Los Angeles Lakers with 18 championship banners.
Unless the Mavericks make history, as no team in league history has ever come back from a 0-3 series deficit, Mazzulla will become an NBA champion while likely setting himself up for a bright future in Boston.
