The New York Giants failed to reach a contract extension with Saquon Barkley at the franchise tag deadline.
He is now forced to either play under the franchise tag this year or sit this season out.
After the deadline passed, Barkley posted a cryptic tweet, saying, “It is what it is.”

At the point of publication, Barkley’s tweet had been viewed 8.4 million times in under 24 hours.
The Giants’ failure to sign Barkley has been noted across the league.
Given the massive number of views that this tweet already has, more analysis and coverage of this will follow.
Many believe that he should have been given a massive contract extension, given his impact on the Giants organization.
He won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2018 and is frequently touted as one of the league’s best backs.
Despite this dominance, however, he and the Giants were unable to agree.
While there haven’t necessarily been definitive facts and figures posted to this point, it has been reported that the two sides were close.
If this contract was truly about minor differences between Barkley and the team, it could signal that he’s closer to sitting out than playing this season.
In recent memory, Le’Veon Bell was the last marquee player to sit out for an entire season due to contract disputes.
This led to him leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers the next season, and moving on to the New York Jets.
Will Barkley’s situation yield a similar result?
