The San Antonio Spurs have found plenty of success with their No. 1 picks and franchise big men throughout the course of their history.
Finding and developing both David Robinson and Tim Duncan set the way for them to become the team they are nowadays.
Now, they’ll hope that Victor Wembanyama will carry that torch and keep that tradition alive.
However, unlike what happened with Robinson and Duncan, Wembanyama’s physique might not be NBA-ready yet, which is why an unnamed scout believes the Spurs will ‘spoon-feed him challenges’ early in his career.
The scout told Ric Bucher (via NBA Central) that he fully expects the Spurs to both load-manage him and competition-manage him, citing that he’s just 19 years old and will need to develop his body to make a successful transition to the league.

Wembanyama is 7-foot-3 and could still grow a couple of inches, and that lanky frame could get him into trouble at the next level.
His agent claimed that they don’t want him to get heavier because it could lead to injuries.
Instead, they’re looking for him to become stronger and strengthen his core.
That will take time, and the Spurs have a long history of being extremely cautious with their franchise players, regardless of the financial or competitive implications it could have.
Wemby is a strong competitor, and he already claimed he doesn’t like sitting out.
But it might not be up to him this time, and it might also be the only way to make sure he has a long and successful career.
