While NFL coaches and players tend to develop close relationships, not many of them could state that they’re actually friends.

That’s why what Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford have is so special.

McVay was literally in the room when Stafford was trying to negotiate a new deal, and that’s not a usual dynamic, particularly not between two people who consider each other friends.

That’s why Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports asked Coach McVay about their relationship and how that kind of thing works for them.

McVay raved about the fact that he had been able to connect with his player on such a level, adding that they’re capable of separating the business side of the game from their relationship, in the same sense that he coaches him pretty hard.

He claimed to be fortunate for having Stafford there, adding that he’s loved the way he’s performed during training camp and reaffirming his love and appreciation for him.

A couple of years ago, McVay admitted that he realized that Stafford was the guy the Rams needed after coming across him and having drinks with him while on vacation.

It didn’t take long before it paid off, as Stafford led the Rams to a Super Bowl win, and their rapport has been unmatched from the second they got together in Los Angeles.

McVay draws plenty of credit for his Xs and Os, adjustments, and whatnot.

But more than that, the relationships he builds with his players might be the biggest factor behind his success.
