The Denver Broncos-Russell Wilson marriage appears to be on its last legs after only two seasons.

The team benched Wilson after 15 games this season over reported contract disputes and could release him during the 2024 offseason.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton denied that any decision has been finalized regarding Wilson’s future, though, and told reporters Tuesday that he told Wilson as much when they last spoke, per Troy Renck via Dov Kleiman.

“I told him, I said, ‘Look, I don’t think it’s going to be a long, drawn-out process,’” Payton said. “‘But it hasn’t been decided relative to what our plans are.’”

Can Wilson stay with the Broncos?

This is one of the weirdest situations in the NFL after the Broncos traded so much to acquire him from the Seattle Seahawks and then handed him a huge contract extension before he even took a snap with the team.

But things got even stranger this season when Denver reportedly asked him to restructure his deal, to which he refused.

The Broncos actually had a slim chance to make the postseason despite another down year, but lost two of the team’s final three games without Wilson under center.

Wilson now heads into an uncertain offseason where he could be traded, become a free agent or – perhaps – return to the Broncos.

Whatever happens, things in Denver are anything but smooth.
