After going 1-3 in their past four games, including a bad loss to the New England Patriots, the Denver Broncos are just about eliminated from making the playoffs.

The Broncos were in the hunt for a Wild Card spot a month ago, but their recent losses really hurt their chances and the organization must now turn to planning for the 2024 NFL season.

Head coach Sean Payton’s first year as the franchise’s head coach has been a rollercoaster and he and the team hit another low when it was announced that Russell Wilson would be benched for the remainder of the season.

Wilson hasn’t been playing well as of late, and his recent performances were enough to justify his benching in favor of backup Jarrett Stidham.

Reportedly, Denver’s reason to bench Wilson stems from the injury guarantee in his contract.

When asked about his role in the decision, Payton sidestepped the question and said that he’s only responsible for the games via Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network.

“I’m not privy to any of those. I’m handling the football,” Payton said.”

It’s hard to believe that Payton didn’t have any say in Wilson’s benching given he’s the head coach, but for now it seems that the former Super Bowl MVP’s time in Denver is up following the season.

The Broncos know they need to rebuild the roster and getting rid of Wilson would help their cap sheet going forward.

With Stidham slated to start this weekend, it will be interesting to see where Wilson lands once he’s officially released.
