After a disappointing 2023 NFL season marred by injuries to key players, the Cincinnati Bengals will look to bounce back in 2024 and get back to competing at the top of the AFC.

Cincinnati’s season was lost last year after Joe Burrow suffered a wrist injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the year, though by all accounts he is back and fully healthy.

With Burrow under center again, the Bengals’ offense should hum though there are still some questions about his weapons.

The biggest uncertainty is Tee Higgins’ future with the team as they franchise tagged him earlier this offseason after the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on an extension.

Higgins reportedly asked out from Cincinnati but has since committed to playing for the organization in 2024 on the franchise tag.

Shannon Sharpe believes Higgins is doing himself a disservice playing on the tag for one year because it could end up costing him more guaranteed money via Nightcap.

“Basically you’re swimming across shark-infested waters 17 times,” Sharpe said. “He’s taking a ginormous risk. $22 million for one year, or do I want the guaranteed money where I get 55, 60, 75, 80 million for three years?”

There are numerous examples of players betting on themselves for one year and then either getting hurt or turning in a down season that ends up costing them money.

For Higgins, receivers are often considered expendable if they don’t perform so if he gets hurt it could cost him tens of millions of dollars.

It’s a high-risk proposition to play on the franchise tag, though Higgins is certainly talented enough to earn himself a hefty contract next offseason.
