The Oklahoma City Thunder showed that they could very well be the future of the Western Conference as their star trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren showed up in their first postseason together.

Although the Thunder were eliminated in six games by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the organization should feel confident knowing they’ve got three legitimate players to build the roster around.

With cap space and draft capital available, general manager Sam Presti has a few options available to him should he want to chase after some meaningful upgrades.

In the series against Dallas, it was clear that Oklahoma City could’ve used another defensive-minded big or wing scorer to ease the burden off of Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams.

The Thunder also have about $35 million in cap space they could use to shore up the roster, though people like Shannon Sharpe believe no star free agents are going to the team via Nightcap.

“No free agents coming to OKC,” Sharpe said.

Unfair or not, geography plays an important factor in free agents’ decisions and Oklahoma City isn’t exactly known for being a destination landing spot for stars.

The team instead has done well drafting young talent with All-Star upside or via trade which is how they landed Gilgeous-Alexander from the Los Angeles Clippers.

Even if the Thunder stand pat this offseason and make marginal moves, they’re still expected to be a title contender once the 2024-25 NBA season rolls around because their core group of players is just that good.
