The Boston Celtics are the clear-cut favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference.

However, we’ve seen and heard that almost every year for the past six years or so, and they’ve only managed to get to the NBA Finals once during that span.

That’s why, as great as they’ve been this season, some still aren’t fully convinced of their ability to get the job done.

Notably, that seems to include Shannon Sharpe, who believes Joel Embiid could be a huge threat to them in the playoffs.

Talking to Gilbert Arenas on his Nightcap show, Sharpe argued that a healthy Embiid is the biggest hurdle the Celtics could have in the East (Via ClutchPoints).

Shannon Sharpe: “If Joel Embiid is gonna stay healthy, he’s the number one threat to the Celtics.”

Gilbert Arenas: “I don’t even know if [he] has beaten Boston… He tried to bring Al [Horford] in to help him get past [them].”

He argued that with him, Tyrese Maxey, and what they’re getting from Kelly Oubre Jr., the Sixers could have a chance, although Arenas stated that Al Horford has owned Embiid.

Horford has, indeed, had plenty of success as the primary defender on Embiid.

Even so, Embiid has a solid tactician for a coach for the first time in his career, and Nick Nurse could draw circles around a less-experienced coach like Joe Mazzulla, who’s repeatedly let big leads slip away.

The Sixers are no ordinary bottom seed, and they’re a completely different team with Embiid on the floor.

Whether he’s going to be healthy or disappear again in the playoffs remains to be seen, but the potential is most definitely there.
