Travis Hunter is well on his way toward becoming a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
He has turned an otherwise average Colorado college football team into must-watch television.
Though having Deion Sanders at head coach and Shedeur Sanders at quarterback also helps, the Buffaloes are clearly the Travis Hunter Show.
So, after watching him play 42 snaps on defense and also make seven receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener, the online debate is whether he’ll be able to continue to do that on both sides of the ball at the next level.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III argued that Hunter definitely could do it, but retired NFL pass-catchers Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson disagree.
Talking on their “Nightcap” show, they argued that no one would be able to play both ways on a full-time basis in today’s NFL.
“It’s different, and the margin of error at the next level,” Johnson said. “Everybody fast. Everybody quick.”

Though Hunter has the ability to excel at both wide receiver and defensive back, Sharpe pointed out he would have to line up against star receivers Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase or Tyreek Hill on defense and then run routes against cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Patrick Surtain II or Trevon Diggs.
Johnson said he believes Hunter should play wide receiver at the NFL level and perhaps get a couple of snaps on defense, the opposite of what Deion Sanders used to do when he was a full-time defensive back with a few plays on offense and as a kick returner during his two-way days in the NFL.
But when it comes to Hunter playing full-time, as exciting as that sounds, that would just be a disservice to him and his body.
He might want to do so, but a team needs to protect its assets, even if that means protecting them from themselves.
