Criticism around the Los Angeles Lakers has been very loud over the last 24 hours, as the team missed out on a chance to secure Dan Hurley as their next head coach.
According to reports, Hurley turned down a six-year, $70 million offer from the Lakers and will remain with UConn instead.
Speaking on “First Take,” Shannon Sharpe attacked the Lakers and said they didn’t do nearly enough to make Hurley want the job.
He said they were cheap, particularly because Hurley already has a job he is very happy with.
“If you want someone…to leave the current job that they’re in, you’ve got to make them an offer they can’t refuse,” Sharpe said.

Hurley is perhaps the most well-respected and beloved coach in college basketball and UConn has treated him very well.
Additionally, he just won back-to-back championships, which is a huge accomplishment that few other coaches have achieved.
If the Lakers wanted him to pack his bags and move from that situation, they needed to give him more than $70 million over six years.
Sharpe said the Lakers are relying on prestige more than money.
They think that their place in NBA history and their legacy will attract talent, but the NBA world has changed and the Lakers aren’t the same team they were 20 years ago.
If they want A-plus talent, they need to offer A-plus contracts.
What makes this more painful for Lakers fans is the fact that the front office had the amount of money that could have impressed Hurley; they just didn’t put it on the table.
They thought they could acquire him for $70 million but they could have offered an awful lot more.
Only Jeanie Buss, Rob Pelinka, and Hurley himself know what happened during negotiations, but most fans and analysts feel that the Lakers didn’t handle this situation well.
