Shaq Barrett shocked the football world recently when he abruptly retired at age 31, hanging up the cleats on a stellar career that will conclude after 10 years that included two Super Bowl wins, two second-team All-Pro selections, two Pro Bowl selections, and 59 sacks.

Barrett recently revealed his reasoning behind hanging them up at just 31 years of age, and it’s for a great reason.

Barrett took to Instagram to address his fans and explain what went into his decision, and he said “I’m ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and helping them realize their dreams and catch ’em” and added, “I know to some it’ll be a surprise but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been more clear than it is now.”

After a decade in the league, two championships, and career earnings that total just over $78 million, there’s nothing left for Barrett to do and he can be proud of the generational wealth he created, the dominant years that he had, and the banners he helped hang that will fly forever.

Barrett’s best year came when he posted 19.5 sacks in 2019, and he won his two Super Bowls in 2016 with the Denver Broncos and 2020 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, both times in his second season during a five-year tenure with each franchise.

Retiring at 31 to spend all your time with your wife and kids is never a bad idea, and we wish Barrett all the best in his new full-time role as husband and dad.
