In any discussion about the most versatile player in MLB, Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani should be the most frequently mentioned name.

There is no competition: no one in the history of the game has been so dominant at pitching and hitting at the same time.

That doesn’t mean versatility should only be measured by one’s ability to bat and pitch, though.

There are other ways to be versatile: playing several positions, hitting for power, stealing bases and taking walks, even playing multiple spots with relative ease.

That means Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star and former MVP Mookie Betts has a really good case to follow Ohtani in the list of most versatile MLB players.

Ohtani himself conceded he was very much impressed with Betts’ skills during the All-Star festivities.

“Shohei Ohtani was asked which All-Star impressed him the most. His answer: Mookie Betts. ‘He’s so versatile; he can play the outfield, play the middle infield. He’s very, very talented,’” Alden Gonzalez tweeted, quoting Ohtani.

Betts is capable of hitting for average (.292 mark over his big league career), power (35 home runs last year and he is already up to 26 in 2023), and has speed and athleticism.

He can play every position in the outfield, second base, and shortstop with relative ease.

He has baseball smarts and has extremely fluid movements.

He is competitive, and already knows what it’s like to win: he has two World Series rings with two different franchises.

Oh, and he is a phenomenal bowler and basketball player.

Make no mistake: Betts is a true star and almost as versatile as Ohtani.
