Even though Dak Prescott is the clear-cut starter for the Dallas Cowboys, the team didn’t pass up the opportunity to shore up their quarterback room.
The Cowboys traded a 2024 fourth-round pick in exchange for Trey Lance who fell toward the bottom of the San Francisco 49ers’ depth chart.
With Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold ahead of him, Lance’s days in the Bay Area were numbered and he now finds himself heading to the Lone Star State where he hopes to revitalize his young NFL career.
Lance was an intriguing prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft due to his strong arm and ability to run the football, but he never had a real opportunity to contribute with San Francisco due to injuries.
Media personalities like Skip Bayless believe Lance can be better than Prescott but he also cautioned that the move is a gamble because of his inexperience and injury history via his Twitter account.
I believe Trey Lance can be better than Dak has ever been. Taller, faster, bigger arm, strong intangibles. BUT: He simply hasn’t played much football and he keeps getting hurt – a scary combination, hard to overcome.

The potential for Lance to be great is certainly there, though it’s hard to imagine him realizing it soon without getting reps on the field.
Behind Prescott, Lance is going to play sparingly unless the former goes down due to injury.
Regardless, Dallas made the smart move in grabbing Lance at the price they did as he does hold some untapped upside that the 49ers were apparently not willing to try and flesh out.
Prescott is slated to lead the way for the Cowboys in 2023, though Lance could carve out a role in the offense because of his dual-threat ability.
