NBA free agency got off to a slow and quiet start on Sunday, but after that, things started to pick up.

The big domino that many were waiting for to fall was which team Paul George would sign with, and he chose the Philadelphia 76ers, who got him to agree to a four-year, $212 million deal.

While Fox Sports 1 personality Skip Bayless admitted George’s decision has given the 76ers a much better chance of winning the Eastern Conference, he felt they paid George too much.

The Sixers way overpaid for Paul George at age 34 in his 15th season. They will regret having to pay him in his 18th and 19th seasons. But I give you this: HE DEFINITELY IMPROVES THEIR CHANCES OF BEATING BOSTON IN THE PLAYOFFS NEXT SEASON AND THE NEXT.

George is a nine-time All-Star, and this past season he averaged 22.6 points a game while shooting 47.1 percent from the field and a career-high 41.3 percent from 3-point range while with the Los Angeles Clippers.

But his injury history is something that cannot be ignored.

While he played in 74 regular season games this past season, he hadn’t appeared in over 56 games since the 2018-19 campaign.

At age 34, one has to figure that wear and tear will mean his chances of staying relatively healthy through an entire season have only fallen.

George’s new contract will take him to age 38, at which point it seems unlikely he will still be an All-Star caliber player.

But at least for now, he’s a legitimate scoring threat who can also make a significant impact on the defensive end, and he should make a significant impact on a Sixers team that looked like a championship contender until Joel Embiid injured his knee several months ago.

This move has cast further doubt on the Boston Celtics’ chances of repeating as NBA champions, as has the New York Knicks’ trade for Mikal Bridges several days ago.
