The Los Angeles Lakers are about to make a big change with their coaching staff and a former NBA star could be getting a call from the team.

Recent reports have said that Darvin Ham is on his way out as Lakers head coach, while the team is contemplating offering the position to former player and current analyst/commentator JJ Redick.

On Friday’s “Undisputed,” Skip Bayless said that hiring Redick could bring a huge reward, but it may also be a major risk for the Lakers too.

He noted that Redick is a smart man who knows the game very well.

Additionally, he is close to LeBron James, the team’s most important player.

But Redick has no experience coaching and it might take him some time to adjust to the position.

Sadly, time is a luxury the Lakers just do not have.

Keyshawn Johnson added onto that last point, saying that Redick would likely get the job because of his relationship with James.

The two men have been friends for years and recently started a highly successful basketball podcast, “Mind The Game.”

Although hiring Redick might make James happy, he still may not be perfect for the position because he could take time to find his footing in the high-stakes world of NBA coaching.

The Lakers have a ticking clock hanging above them because of James’ age and looming retirement.

They don’t have the time to let a coach come into his own and develop; instead, they need someone who can coach the team to a championship right away.

Perhaps Redick would be one of those rare first-year coaches who comes into the league ready for serious success.

But are the Lakers willing to take a chance on him and find out?
