With the rookie season of Victor Wembanyama now in the rearview mirror, the San Antonio Spurs will turn their attention toward building a very competitive team around him.

They will have the No. 4 and No. 8 picks in next month’s draft, and there have been rumors that perhaps they will package at least one of those picks in a trade for an established All-Star-caliber guard.

But according to Kelly Iko, they’re “big fans” of guard Stephon Castle of the University of Connecticut, who is expected to be a lottery pick this year, per NBACentral.

Castle stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 215 pounds and he possesses ample athleticism, which he uses to attack the basket.

Although he averaged just 2.9 assists a game in his lone season at UConn, he is a solid passer and playmaker.

He isn’t a good outside shooter, however, and he made just 26.7 percent from 3-point range this season.

But perhaps his best strength is his defense, and he projects to be able to guard multiple positions effectively at the next level.

San Antonio currently has little support around Wembanyama, who was recently named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, and they finished with a 22-60 record, which was the second-worst mark in the Western Conference.

While he is just scratching the surface of his immense potential, the Spurs don’t have all the time in the world to find him a legitimate co-star.

Their fans are accustomed to success after the team won five world championships during the Tim Duncan era, and before long, they may get very antsy if the Spurs don’t show steady improvement.
