Ever since the departures of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard, the San Antonio Spurs have been mired in the NBA’s basement.

But they seem to have a pathway back to the upper echelon thanks to Victor Wembanyama, their rookie sensation who lived up to the hype this season.

They’re now looking to get him help as soon as possible and per Jonathan Givony (via Evan Sidery), they’re looking to package their No. 4 and No. 8 picks in the upcoming draft in order to land the No. 1 overall selection.

The Spurs are exploring the idea of potentially packaging Nos. 4 and 8 overall to move up with the Hawks to No. 1, per @DraftExpress.

The consensus No. 1 pick in this year’s draft is Alexandre Sarr, a seven-footer who spent this past season with the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia.

Like Wembanyama, Sarr is from France, but he isn’t exactly the potential-laden prospect the former has been.

Overall, it may not make a lot of sense for San Antonio to draft another big man at this point.

One possibility could be Nikola Topic, an 18-year-old point guard out of Europe who is 6-foot-6 and has high basketball IQ and a strong feel for the game.

Of course, the Spurs could simply elect to trade the No. 1 pick, should they end up acquiring it, in order to secure a proven star and pair him with Wembanyama.

This year’s draft isn’t thought to be a strong one overall, so perhaps using at least one draft pick as trade bait to land someone who will help them right now could be the best move for them.
