The San Antonio Spurs have had a creative offseason in an effort to build a more competitive team around second-year superstar Victor Wembanyama without committing too much money to huge long-term contracts that don’t fit Wemby’s timeline.

After bringing in Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul, the Spurs are reportedly interested in bringing in two more accomplished veterans.

Yahoo’s Jake Fischer reported that the Spurs have been showing interest in Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard and Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland, saying “Before San Antonio brought Chris Paul to organize the Spurs’ offense around Victor Wembanyama, sources said San Antonio called various teams around the league exploring veteran guards who have still yet to enter their primes. Cavaliers All-Star guard Darius Garland was another talented ball-handler the Spurs called about, sources said, although Cleveland has rebuffed any inbound trade interest for Garland to date.”

Nembhard also just signed a 3-year, $59 million extension with the Pacers, so that may remove him from any possible trade scenarios.

Garland is the more interesting piece since Donovan Mitchell recently committed to stay in Cleveland following weeks of trade rumors, and many fans believe he and Garland don’t fit well together in the backcourt.

Even though Fischer said Cleveland isn’t interested in a Garland trade, it’s still a situation to monitor given the long-term commitment to Mitchell.

It’s great to see the Spurs taking this approach, as Wembanyama is so young and the team still has a lot of teams to climb over in the Western Conference, but sitting back and doing nothing to improve runs the risk of stunting Wemby’s development.
