At this point in the NBA offseason, things have really started to die down in terms of player movement around the league, with the majority of the potential game-changers in NBA free agency re-signing with their teams or agreeing to deals to play elsewhere next season.

Even though free agency is more or less over with a lot of notable players signing their new contracts, there’s still a chance that some blockbuster trades could get done before the start of the 2024-25 NBA season, with one big-name player currently on the trade block with numerous teams trying to acquire him this summer.

Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz has been mentioned several times over the last couple of weeks as a potential player on the move, with the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs seemingly in a two-team race for his services.

The Warriors are trying to bounce back after losing Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks while also hoping for at least one more championship run with Stephen Curry running the show while the Spurs want another star to join Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Spurs are willing to part with multiple first-round picks as well as Keldon Jackson, which could make them the frontrunner to get a deal done via Legion Hoops.

“The Spurs have shown a willingness to part with multiple first-round picks, as well as Keldon Johnson, in a potential deal for Lauri Markkanen,” Siegel said.

Unless another team comes up with a deal that the Jazz can’t refuse, the Markkanen sweepstakes may be decided between the Warriors and Spurs.

The acquisition of Markkanen would accelerate the Spurs’ rebuilding process around Wembanyama while Golden State might be able to contend for a title or at least greatly improve their chances if they can bring him in to play with Curry and Draymond Green.
