Stat Highlights A Historically Bad August For The Angels

On August 1, the Los Angeles Angels envisioned a much, much different scenario than the one they are currently stuck with.

On that date, they were 56-51 and had decided to be buyers at the deadline.

They acquired Randal Grichuk, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Dominic Leone and other pieces to help their postseason quest.

They were determined to get Shohei Ohtani to his first postseason.

It’s fair to say that things have gone south since then.

Today, the Angels are 63-70 and making the playoffs is almost impossible at this point.

Immediately after the deadline, the Angels fell into a seven-game skid, and they never recovered.

After that, Ohtani got hurt and he can’t be used as a pitcher anymore, there were some desperate call-ups and moves, and even Mike Trout rushed his return from a hand injury and then got hurt again.

Their injury luck has been horrible, so it’s also important to say that.

All of these factors have resulted in the Angels’ worst month in history when it comes to run differential.

“Worst run differential in a single month, Angels franchise history: 1. AUGUST 2023: -76 runs, 2. August 2015: -72 runs, 3. September 2019: -63 runs, 4. May 1969: -61 runs, 5. June 1999: -56 runs,” MLB researcher Brent Maguire tweeted.

Yikes.

It’s important to point out that the month hasn’t ended for them, so things could be a bit better… or worse.

They just waived a bunch of players, looking for salary relief, and some of them were acquired just a few weeks ago before the deadline.

It’s fair to say that the end of the regular season could be very ugly for fans.
