Almost every perfect game in the history of MLB involves a bit of good luck.

There is nothing wrong with that: it’s a historic achievement and as such, it often requires good fortunes to be on the pitcher’s side.

We saw one or two defensive gems from the New York Yankees fielders while helping Domingo German achieve the 24th perfect game in MLB’s history, but in reality, the pitcher was in complete control all night long.

German struck out nine hitters and conceded 18 balls in play.

The quality of the contact he allowed was optimal for the most part: there weren’t any screaming liners that required the outfielders to go out of their way and make spectacular catches to preserve the pitching gem.

“Domingo German allowed 18 batted balls in play tonight. Only 1 of them had a hit probability of at least 50% (Esteury Ruiz lineout in 3rd, 67% hit prob)”, statistician Katie Sharp tweeted.

Ruiz represented a huge threat for German’s perfection bid.

Any ball hit slowly to the infield would have likely resulted in a hit given his elite speed.

Additionally, that lineout with a 67 percent hit probability was probably the most dangerous batted ball German allowed all night.

His fastball-curveball-changeup combo was not only nasty from a pitch movement standpoint, but he also commanded every pitch masterfully.

Known for leaving one or two pitches in the fat part of the zone in each of his starts, that wasn’t the case on Wednesday night: he was surgical, and is now reaping the benefits.
