Being a coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers was a synonym for job security, at least for a full year.

Perhaps that’s why Matt Canada thought he was in the clear this season, even if he clearly wasn’t doing a good job.

The front office had it so much with Canada that they even made history by firing him, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Paul Hembo).

History today in Pittsburgh: When the Steelers fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada today, it marked the first time they have made an in-season coaching change since 1941, per @PaulHembo.

The decision to let Canada go led to the first time the Steelers have fired a coach or an assistant coach in-season since 1941 when the team’s half-owner Bert Bell decided to fire himself.

Truth be told, it was about time.

Canada’s offense was outdated, out of sync, predictable, and just too basic.

Granted that he didn’t have the best resources to work with, and there are still plenty of doubts about whether Kenny Pickett is a franchise-caliber quarterback or not, but he didn’t do himself any favors.

The fans had urged the team to part ways with him multiple times in the past, but most of them had just dealt with the fact that it wasn’t going to happen because that’s just not how the Steelers usually take care of their business.

Now, there will be even more pressure on Pickett to deliver, as he’ll play within a different offense, hopefully built around his skill set and current teammates, and it’ll be up to him to prove that he’s the guy they need for the future, which will be a bit of an uphill battle at this point.
