The Dallas Cowboys had a chance to build on last season’s roster, make some moves, and come back stronger this season.
They could’ve hired a better coach, as Bill Belichick was available.
They could’ve revamped their running back position with Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Aaron Jones, Austin Ekeler, Gus Edwards, JK Dobbins, Joe Mixon, or D’Andre Swift.
They could’ve kept their best players happy by signing them to contract extensions in a timely matter.
They didn’t do any of those things.
Now, they’re not a better team than they were last season, and they’re not better than most actual contenders, either.
That’s why Stephen A. Smith, who’s a well-known Cowboys critic but also a good friend of Jerry Jones, had no choice but to look him in the eye and let him know that he doesn’t like their chances to win this season.

Talking on ESPN’s First Take, Smith shared some details about his recent interview with the controversial Cowboys owner.
He reportedly let him know that he could’ve improved his coaching situation and roster, but Jones seemed convinced of his current team.
Truth be told, it’s hard to think that a team that’s fresh off one of the toughest losses in their history and didn’t improve their roster would be any better in the following season.
The Cowboys don’t have a better team than the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, or Green Bay Packers.
And that’s not going to change until they change their approach to roster-building.
