Despite being arguably the most famous athlete ever to walk the face of the Earth, and most definitely the biggest sensation in NBA history, Michael Jordan isn’t much of a public figure.

Considered to be the greatest player ever, Jordan has kept mostly to himself since walking away from the game, not even showing up to many NBA-related activities despite being a former team owner.

That’s why, instead of spreading the message himself, he’s often gotten ESPN pundit Stephen A. Smith to be his messenger.

That was the case again on Wednesday’s edition of First Take.

Smith took a minute to read Jordan’s statement about Jerry West’s passing.

Michael Jordan texted @stephenasmith to honor Jerry West.

“I am so deeply saddened at the news of Jerry’s passing. He was truly a friend and a mentor. Like an older brother to me. … Rest in Peace, Logo.” pic.twitter.com/kvkXqqSf63

Jordan texted the controversial pundit to share his thoughts and how sad he was to hear the news.

He praised West for being not only a friend but also an older brother and a mentor.

He claimed that he always wished that he would be able to compete against him, but the more he knew him, the more he would’ve wanted to be his teammate instead.

Jordan shared his condolences to his wife and sons and claimed that West would be missed forever.

It’s kind of odd to see that Jordan used Smith’s platform instead of using his own.

Even so, being the prominent figure he is and given Jerry West’s importance and legacy in the basketball community, it shouldn’t take long before any of his brands releases a statement, and he’s more than likely to be present at the memorial.
