The Los Angeles Lakers failed to lure Dan Hurley away from the University of Connecticut.
Not even a very lucrative offer was enough to make him leave the Huskies, and some argue that the Lakers’ coaching job isn’t as appealing as it used to be.
The clock is ticking, and the NBA Draft is just around the corner, so the Lakers shouldn’t wait for much longer before hiring a coach.
So, now that the Detroit Pistons have fired Monty Williams, Stephen A. Smith believes the Lakers should definitely consider hiring him.
Talking on ESPN’s First Take (via Awful Announcing), Smith stated that Williams being available could change the picture for the Lakers, who are reportedly close to hiring either James Borrego or JJ Redick.
“With Monty Williams available, that is a situation the Los Angeles Lakers should look at.”

Over the past week or so, Smith has been overly critical of the Lakers’ alleged interest in Redick.
He called out LeBron James for the timing of their podcast, citing that he knew Darvin Ham was on the hot seat and that it just wasn’t a good look to have him breaking down plays and doing analysis.
With that in mind, his words about the Lakers pivoting from Redick to Williams should be taken with a grain of salt.
Then again, Williams does have plenty of coaching experience, which Redick doesn’t.
Still, perhaps going after a coach who was given $65 million not to coach a team any longer might not be the best look for Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss either, so this is a complicated situation.
