It’s the time on the NFL calendar when training camps are just around the corner, and veteran free agents are looking for their next team to suit up for.
One is long-time cornerback Stephon Gilmore, a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time First Team All-Pro selection who remains unemployed.
He started 17 games with the Dallas Cowboys last season but was not signed to return to the team in the offseason.
NFL insider Josina Anderson spoke to Gilmore via telephone and relayed his status in free agency.
The 12-year veteran explained that there are still excellent secondary pieces on the NFL market waiting to be signed for the upcoming season.
Free agent CB Stephon Gilmore with the latest on his status to me on the phone:
“There are still some good corners and safeties out there like Justin Simmons and myself that are still not signed. Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have… pic.twitter.com/JeVCrlLICv

Gilmore said, “Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have in training camp, but you mean to tell me among 32 teams that there are 64 starting corners better than me?”
He added that teams should sign the best players if they want to win.
Gilmore insisted that he is still an NFL starter.
He was the Buffalo Bills’ first-round draft selection out of South Carolina in 2012 and spent his first five NFL seasons in upstate New York.
However, his career peaked during a four-year stint with New England when he was twice an All-Pro and led the league in interceptions with six in 2019.
Gilmore has 31 picks in his illustrious career but is unemployed while seeking to extend his playing days with a new franchise.
Starter or not, it is highly likely that a team will look to add secondary depth in the coming weeks, and Gilmore will be plucked off the free-agent market.
