Although Patrick Mahomes won his third Super Bowl MVP after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, the defense also deserves it’s fair share of credit.

The Chiefs allowed the 49ers to score 10 points in the first half, but held them to 12 points in the second half and overtime to put the offense in a position to catch up.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo did an excellent job calling the defense in the second half as he was able to get more pressure on Brock Purdy.

Purdy got off to a strong start in the game’s first series, but seemed to slow down as the evening wore on.

Spagnuolo used a host of different coverages and schemes to confuse Purdy and get the defense off the field.

However, Spagnuolo couldn’t help but praise Purdy’s composure throughout the game via The ALL NFL podcast.

“They were behind in those other playoff games and he didn’t flinch… He didn’t flinch in this game. Nick Bolton hit him once right after he got rid of the ball… a couple other shots that he took and I don’t think he got flustered at all,” Spagnuolo said.

Purdy has numerous doubters throughout the year, but proved many of them wrong with his tough play on the field.

The second-year quarterback never seemed rattled after taking a hit or missing a throw, but not being able to lead the 49ers to a win will have people wondering whether or not he’s the long-term answer for San Francisco.
