The Phoenix Suns were expected to be one of the best teams in the Western Conference during the 2023-24 NBA season.
After all, apart from forming a Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, the Suns also signed Frank Vogel as the head coach of the team.
Vogel is known for his defensive strategy, which could certainly benefit a team like the Suns that primarily had offensive stars on the roster.
However, even with Vogel’s defensive mastermind, the Suns shockingly suffered a defeat against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.
Just before the loss, Vogel pointed out how he was not looking toward finding a way to simplify the defense for his team, via Duane Rankin on Twitter.
“We have to build a system that’s going to win for us in the playoffs. We want it to be simple enough that it can be executed, but we have to build throughout the course of the season,” Vogel said.

Vogel’s strategy is certainly not wrong as he is thinking forward and trying to prepare the team for the 2024 playoffs.
But these strategies are only good when they work in favor of the team.
In the Tuesday night defeat at the hands of the Trail Blazers, the Suns undoubtedly struggled to play good defense.
They suffered a 109-104 defeat against a team that ranks 14th in the Western Conference with a 7-19 record.
As a result, the Suns have now dropped to the 10th seed in the West with a 14-13 record.
It was a concerning defeat for the team as Kevin Durant scored a game-high 40 points, but it was still not enough for the Suns to clinch a win against a struggling team.
