The Dallas Cowboys have faced scrutiny during the NFL offseason.
Many pundits believe they have one of the league’s best rosters, but they haven’t turned that into meaningful postseason runs.
Several factors have been named as a potential reason for the team’s downfall, including quarterback play and coaching.
In a recent segment of ‘Speak’ on FS1, James Jones discussed the state of the team’s quarterback position.
He believes the recent Trey Lance deal is more than for a backup role, saying, “I truly believe that Trey Lance is the future of this football team.”

Jones cited Mike McCarthy’s past with Aaron Rodgers, who sat behind Brett Favre.
Rodgers took over as the franchise quarterback, and the rest is history.
Jones was quick to point out that Lance isn’t the same prospect that Rodgers was, or that he has a similar career ceiling.
But, with some time to develop, he does believe Lance can usurp Prescott as the starting quarterback eventually.
Prescott is getting close to a contract extension in a few years, as Jones points out.
Jones believes that the team will move on from Prescott when his current contract expires, paving the way for Lance to step in as the starter.
The Cowboys are a historic organization, one that is used to winning.
However, winning is not something they have done a lot of lately, especially in the playoffs.
If the team is inpatient, or if Prescott’s interception problems persist, Lance’s path to the starting role could materialize quicker than expected.
