There is no quarterback controversy with the Philadelphia Eagles. Jalen Hurts is the team’s starter and one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL.
However, there might be a quiet battle going on behind him for the backup role between Tanner McKee and Kenny Pickett.
McKee recently spoke with the Philadelphia media about his role in the quarterback room.
“I’m just ready to go out and play whenever they call my name. … Kenny’s been a great teammate and we’re gonna continue to compete for probably the whole year,” McKee said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia.

In his second year in the NFL after being drafted out of Stanford in the sixth round in 2023, McKee is looking to be a reliable option for head coach Nick Sirianni if he needs him.
McKee has not played in an NFL regular season game, but Pickett, who was traded for earlier this offseason, started 24 games in two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers were 14-10 in his starts, and Pickett has 13 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions in his NFL career.
Just going off of experience and numbers, it seems as though Pickett might be the backup to Hurts.
McKee seems to be a developmental prospect more than anything else.
Veteran Will Grier is also on the preseason roster and is going into his sixth NFL season (first with the Eagles).
The real battle might actually be between McKee and Grier for that No. 3 spot on the depth chart, depending on how many quarterbacks the Eagles want to keep after the preseason is over.
