Despite all the rumors and reports, the Houston Texans never hesitated to take C.J. Stroud in the NFL Draft.

The Ohio State product was ranked as the second-best quarterback in his class by most experts, and the Texans trusted him to be the right guy to lead the post-Deshaun Watson era.

That’s why HC DeMeco Ryans wants to give his young star as many reps as he can handle, naming him the starter — again — for their second preseason game, this time versus the Miami Dolphins (via Ari Meirov).

Meirov reports that the Texans have yet to make an announcement regarding their Week 1 starter for their game against the Baltimore Ravens, but barring a major turn of events, Stroud should be under center for that matchup.

Stroud wasn’t exactly impressive in his first preseason action, but his offensive line didn’t do him any favors.

He was running for his life as soon as he set foot on the field, but his interception came due to poor decision-making.

Even as a starter, he’s not likely to be on the field for long versus Miami, as the team will look to keep him safe for the season.

Some believe he’d be better off if they started Davis Mills over him while he continues to get a hold of the offense and gets ready to do his thing.

But with the Texans not in a rush to compete at a high level, perhaps the best way to develop him is by actually having him on the field right out of the gate.
