The Houston Texans will get a big boost on the field next season, and not just from a football perspective.

WR John Metchie III has been officially cleared to participate in training camp after missing his entire rookie season battling leukemia.

The Alabama product made it to the league as a second-round pick but was unable to make his debut after being diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) shortly after the 2022 NFL Draft.

Texans HC DeMeco Ryans had already hinted at Metchie’s comeback, citing that he was right on schedule to be with the team after OTAs.

He participated in their offseason workout program before a hamstring injury ruled him out for the final stretch.

Needless to say, the 23-year-old wouldn’t allow a minor setback to get in the way of his major comeback, and he’s earned the praise and respect of everybody around him.

He’s had some issues with injuries throughout the course of his career, but barring another setback, he could be poised to become one of C.J. Stroud’s favorite targets for years to come.

Even if his career doesn’t pan out the way he expects, he’s already won in life, and he’s a walking reminder that some things are just bigger than football.
