After seemingly endless speculation and rumors, the San Francisco 49ers have finally parted ways with former first-round draft pick Trey Lance.

The team was rumored to be in talks with the Minnesota Vikings, which is Lance’s hometown team, but then that drastically changed on Friday ahead of the team’s preseason finale.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dallas Cowboys have acquired Lance in a deal with the 49ers.

This is an interesting move by the Cowboys, to say the least, with a report recently coming out about the team talking about a lucrative contract extension with veteran quarterback Dak Prescott.

The extension the team was or is negotiating with Prescott will almost certainly reset the quarterback market, which makes this move to acquire Lance a bit perplexing.

Even though Lance isn’t expected to take over a starting role anytime soon, he’ll likely be in the running to compete for the job as soon as next season.

This obviously will lead to speculation as to whether the Cowboys are happy with Prescott and if they’re considering making a change because bringing in a high draft pick like Lance is a sign that the veteran might be on the hot seat, especially if he doesn’t get his extension.

As for Lance, this is an opportunity for a fresh start on one of the most famous and popular sports teams in the world, which might be precisely what he needs after all that went on in San Francisco.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Cowboys’ intentions are with Lance and if Prescott could be heading into his last season as the team’s starter.
