The Bills Have Made A Decision About Their New DC

The Buffalo Bills played the entire 2023 season without a true defensive coordinator after head coach Sean McDermott took over defensive play-calling duties following Leslie Frazier’s departure before the season.

It made sense, as McDermott was a long-time defensive coordinator in the NFL before taking over in Buffalo.

But after one year of McDermott running the defense, the Bills decided to hand over the responsibility to someone else in the organization, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport: linebackers coach Bobby Babich.

The #Bills are promoting LBs coach Bobby Babich to be their new defensive coordinator, sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo.

Babich will inherit one of the best defenses in the NFL after Buffalo finished top-10 in points and yards allowed in four of McDermott’s seven seasons at the helm.

The Bills need both sides of the ball to play at an elite level after failing to advance to the Super Bowl once more despite solid contributions from quarterback Josh Allen and the defense.

The AFC is riddled with top-tier quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals), Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Rams), and Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins), not to mention that Aaron Rodgers should return fully healthy in 2024 for the New York Jets.

This won’t be an easy task for Babich, but the Bills clearly have enough faith in him to give him the role.
