The St. Louis Cardinals made a depth move on Friday.
They are trying to strengthen their roster at all positions, as they look to get out of the last place in the NL Central division.
They announced the move on Twitter.
“We have acquired INF/OF Richie Palacios from Cleveland in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Memphis (AAA). To make room on the 40-player roster, OF Tyler O’Neill has been transferred to the 60-day IL,” they wrote on their official account.

Palacios is not going to the MLB active roster for the time being, but he was, indeed, added to the 40-man roster, which required a move.
That move was transferring O’Neill to the 60-day IL.
O’Neill, once one of the most promising sluggers in the National League, has already missed a month with a back issue and his return isn’t imminent, so placing him on the 60-day list doesn’t affect his timeline.
Palacios, on the other hand, can play second base and the outfield and makes for solid minor league depth.
There isn’t much upside with his bat, though.
He was designated for assignment earlier this week.
He slashed .217/.351/.318 in 56 games in the Guardians’ Triple-A affiliate this season.
Perhaps there could be a clearer path towards playing time, or a spot on the Cards’ MLB roster, at some point but it’s not a given.
It will depend on him improving on that statline: he can definitely get on base, but is not a burner and power is next to zero.
