Earlier this season, it looked as though the San Francisco Giants had a chance to potentially dethrone the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the NL West.
While that still remains a possibility, the team has suddenly found itself in a serious funk, having lost six games in a row and dropped into a three-way tie for the final two Wild Card spots in the National League.
On Monday, they dropped a makeup game against the Detroit Tigers, the team they beat in the 2012 World Series, by a final score of 5-1.
On Twitter, Bob Nightengale pointed out just how bad things have gotten lately with the Giants.
The #SFGiants, who were storming towards 1st place in the NL West with 7 consecutive victories, have suddenly found themselves in a free-fall, losing their 6th consecutive game, 5-1, to the #Tigers after being swept by the #Nationals, dropping to 3rd place, 4.5 games behind LA.

San Francisco had been on a seven-game winning streak and was creeping closer to the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks for the top spot in the NL West.
They still are just four games back with a little over two months left in the season.
However, as Nightengale notes, things have changed drastically for the Giants.
They were swept over the weekend by the Washington Nationals after losing the final two games of a four-game series against the young, upstart Cincinnati Reds.
Solid talent remains on their current roster, including stars such as Logan Webb, Joc Pederson, Wilmer Flores, Casey Schmitt, Patrick Bailey, J.D. Davis, and Camilo Doval.
However, the Giants will need to turn things around quick if they want to retain a chance at potentially chasing down the Dodgers and winning their second NL West title in three years.
The Giants are currently 54-47 on the season.
