The Dallas Mavericks continue to make moves as they get ready for the upcoming season.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, they just signed long-time assistant Bryan Gates to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff.

Veteran assistant Bryan Gates has agreed to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN. Gates spent the past two seasons with Monty Williams and the Suns.

Per Wojnarowski, Gates had last been an assistant of Monty Williams with the Phoenix Suns.

The assistant coach has been in the league since 2009, and he’s spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, and New Orleans Pelicans before his stint in the Valley of the Sun.

The Mavs have also been tied to a potential move for former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy, who was recently laid off by ESPN after 16 seasons.

Notably, Mark Cuban’s team managed to secure its top target for the offseason, which was obviously Kyrie Irving.

Some might feel like they overpaid a little, as they were pretty much bidding against themselves because of the lack of suitors.

Kyrie’s history of off-court controversies made multiple teams hesitant to pay him top-dollar or have him for a very long contract, but the Mavs couldn’t afford to drop the ball and watch him walk away after trading so much to get him in the first place.

Irving’s first couple of months with the organization weren’t exactly positive, at least on the court, but they still have hope that he and Luka Doncic can lead the team to success in the foreseeable future, so it only makes sense that the team also hires experienced and bonafide assistant coaches to help them fulfill their potential.
