The Mets Announce A Notable Demotion

In 2021, New York Mets right-hander Tylor Megill proved to be a quality depth starter for the franchise.

He broke into the majors by making 18 starts with a 4.52 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 89.2 innings.

After that, however, his performance in the big leagues has been steadily declining.

Last year, his ERA rose to 5.13 in 47.1 frames, although he kept striking out more hitters (51) than his innings total.

The decline extended to the current campaign, and Megill not only has an ERA over five at 5.17; he is no longer missing as many bats as he used to, with 58 punchouts in 71.1 innings.

With a horrific series of recent performances, the Mets had no choice but to demote him to Triple-A Syracuse.

“The Mets have optioned Tylor Megill to Triple-A Syracuse, according to their transactions page. A not-unexpected rotation shakeup for a team that had considered skipping Megill earlier this month. He has a 7.56 ERA over his last six starts,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

For now, reliever Vinny Nittoli will take his spot on the roster.

A 7.56 ERA in his last six outings is something that no manager can live with, so the writing was probably on the wall for Megill.

Still, he has a chance to return later in the season if he can right the ship or if injuries force the Mets’ hand.

For a time in 2021 and even last year, the Mets thought they had a quality, above-average pitcher in Megill.

That doesn’t appear to be the case now, as his upside is very limited at the moment.
