The Padres Are Approaching Terrible MLB History

The San Diego Padres are one of MLB’s most disappointing teams this season.

One year after making the NL Championship Series, they are now in real danger of missing the postseason altogether.

As of Tuesday afternoon, they are 56-63 and in fourth place of the NL West division.

One-run games have been a struggle for the Friars: inexplicably, they are 6-19 in those.

“Following yesterday’s 5-4 loss to Arizona, the Padres are now 6-19 (.240) in games decided by one run this season. That would be the worst record in one-run games by a major league team in a season since the 1935 Boston Braves went 7-31 (.184) in such games,” OptaSTATS tweeted.

A team hasn’t been that bad in such games in 88 years.

88 years!

The most baffling thing of all is that the Padres actually have one of the best run differentials in the National League at +54.

That is better than every NL West team except for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It’s hard to explain this phenomenon: the Chicago Cubs were in a similar situation a few weeks ago.

They had a lousy record but a positive run differential.

Eventually, their record started to reflect the positive differential as they got more wins.

That hasn’t happened with the Padres.

In clutch situations (late innings, one-run games), they have failed to be competitive, and that has severely damaged their chances of making the postseason.

Inconsistent bullpen play and the offense going cold in the latter stages of games have contributed to San Diego’s lousy record in one-run games.
