The 2023 San Diego Padres are, quite likely, better than their 68-77 record shows.
They own a +64 run differential, yet remain buried in fourth place of the NL West.
Their chances of making the postseason are almost zero at this point, and a big part of the problem is that they couldn’t consistently win close games and in extra-innings.
As of Tuesday afternoon, their record in one-run games is 6-22, by far the worst of all 30 MLB teams.
They are also 0-11 in extra-innings, again the worst in the league by a wide margin.
For a night, however, they were able to show some resolve and win a close game against a top contender.
“Final: Padres 11, Dodgers 8. Manny Machado homered twice. Juan Soto’s three-run blast in the 9th proved decisive. The Padres earned their largest comeback win of the season, the type of back-and-forth game decided in the late innings that they’ve lost on the regular this season,” Padres insider AJ Cassavell tweeted.

It was a victory unlike any other we have seen the Padres pull off in 2023.
They were down 7-2 after the conclusion of the third inning.
However, their power bats appeared when it mattered the most and they slowly began to get closer on the scoreboard until they exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth inning.
There, Soto hit a three-run blast and Xander Bogaerts added a solo shot.
If the Padres had won a few more games like this one, they would probably in contention as we speak.
Suffice it to say, that wasn’t the case.
