In baseball, there are very few plays more exciting than a game-tying grand slam.
You see your team falling into a four-run hole, but then you send a ball to the stands with the bases loaded and it’s a new beginning, a whole new ballgame.
That’s what Detroit Tigers left fielder Kerry Carpenter experienced on Wednesday afternoon.

Playing against a contender in the Chicago Cubs, Carpenter found a pitch he liked and sent it over the fence to quickly erase the 4-0 deficit and turn it into a 4-4 tie.
Jameson Taillon, the Cubs’ hurler, couldn’t believe the scene.
It was yet another big hit for the Tigers’ rising star.
Carpenter is slashing a cool .288/.354/.541 with a .895 OPS in 311 plate appearances.
He has 19 home runs and is cementing his place as a piece for the future in the lineup.
There aren’t a lot of promising hitters in the Tigers lineup, but the soon-to-be 26-year-old thumper is certainly one of them.
The lefty-hitting masher has been particularly hot since the All-Star break, batting .320/.396/.609 with a 1.005 OPS.
Finally, after several ugly seasons, the Tigers seem to be finding quality players for the future.
As a team, things haven’t gone their way with a 58-68 record.
Still, it represents an improvement over what they did last season and all progress should be taken, accepted, and embraced.
Without Miguel Cabrera’s contract next year, with Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, and Carpenter developing and a few of their pitchers gaining consistency, the Tigers might be starting to see a path to the future.
