The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off a season of disappointment after the team went all-in by making a blockbuster trade, which was incredibly lopsided, for defensive-minded center Rudy Gobert.

With the team risking its future by sending a ridiculous amount of draft picks to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Gobert, the moves the team makes from here on out have to be calculated and careful, as the squad could risk losing Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards.

On Wednesday, the Timberwolves made a move that few saw coming, especially considering the team’s situation and lack of flexibility moving forward.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Timberwolves won’t guarantee Taurean Prince’s contract for next season, which will make him a free agent as a result.

The Timberwolves are declining to guarantee Taurean Prince’s $7.4M contract for the 2023-2024 season, sources tell ESPN. Prince — who’s averaged 10.4 points in his seven years — joins the free agent market.

The Timberwolves recently agreed to a contract extension with center Naz Reid, which wasn’t a bad move, as they got ahead of him testing the free-agent market this summer.

As for letting Prince walk, it seems like a head-scratching move that might come back to haunt them, as they’re letting a pretty good shooter hit the open market when they could’ve had him for less than $8 million next season.

However, it remains uncertain what the Timberwolves may have planned for the summer, as they may have big plans to either make another splash with a trade or make a key signing in free agency, which gets underway this weekend.

Last season, Prince averaged 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from the floor and 38.1% from beyond the arc.
