Until very recently, we saw the New York Yankees fail to compete against the best teams in the league and win games against the likes of the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals.
This happened after they swept the Royals in a series from July 21-23.
Time has passed, injuries have happened, and the team is somehow getting more inconsistent despite getting Aaron Judge back.
Now, we can’t even say the Yankees consistently beat weaker opposition.
That’s a real problem if they want to have any chance of advancing to the postseason.
“Yankees have lost series to the following: White Sox x2, Red Sox x2, Cardinals, Rockies, Angels. Can’t lose all of those if you’re calling yourself a championship caliber operation,” The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner tweeted.

All those teams, except the Red Sox, are playing .500 ball or worse.
So the Yankees aren’t only having real issues winning games against top teams, but they also can’t consistently beat mediocre clubs.
The Anthony Rizzo injury and the struggles of Luis Severino have been the latest issues to appear.
It has been a long, tumultuous season in the Bronx, and there doesn’t seem to be an ending in sight for the struggles.
Of the five pitchers that were supposed to comprise the rotation, two are currently on the injured list (Frankie Montas and Carlos Rodon), one visited it for weeks (Nestor Cortes) and another one has the worst ERA by a starter with at least 60 innings (Severino, at 8.06).
Only Gerrit Cole has been healthy and consistently good.
A similar situation has happened with the lineup.
The Yanks, filled with bad contracts and few impact prospects, are in a tough position, and not just for this year.
