The Yankees Offense Is Showing Severe Depth Issues

The New York Yankees offense has been rather unimpressive in 2023.

Before Tuesday’s games, they ranked 22nd in baseball (out of 30 teams) in runs scored, with 94.

That’s extremely low for a team that has Aaron Judge and prides itself on being called the Bronx Bombers.

Yes, key components of the lineup have missed time with injury, most notably Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, and Harrison Bader.

But the team had outfield depth issues even before the season started and did little to remedy the situation.

They knew that Aaron Hicks had been struggling for two years and opted to bring in just a couple of veteran journeymen in Willie Calhoun and Franchy Cordero.

They also knew Donaldson was a below-average hitter last year and did little to attend to the third base situation.

The offseason inactivity (to some degree, since they did bring in Carlos Rodon to the rotation) has caused the bottom of the Yankees lineup to be one of the worst in baseball.

“Here’s a stat from the @MLBNetwork research department: The #Yankees‘ bottom half of the order has struggled. Only the Royals (.530) have a worse OPS from their #5-to-#9 spots combined than the Yankees (.570) in MLB this season,” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and DJ LeMahieu have all been productive, to varying degrees, in 2023.

Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres have alternated good performances with bad ones.

The rest of the lineup has been a mess.

Calhoun, Cordero, Hicks, Jose Trevino, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa haven’t been good or reliable.

Their lack of production is limiting the Yanks’ offensive potential.

They need to fix their offense if they want to make it into October.
