Running backs have had to fight tooth and nail to get big long-term contracts in recent years as more and more teams become hesitant to allocate cap space to a position with such a high turnover rate.

Former New York Giant Saquon Barkley is now hitting free agency as the biggest prize at the position and he’ll once again be pushing for over $10 million a year on a long-term deal.

Jordan Raanan of ESPN has reported that $10 million is indeed the number that most executives and agents around the league are expecting for the star running back.

A look at Saquon Barkley’s market. The $10 million range is what most executives and agents expect.

At 27 years old, this is likely Barkley’s last shot at a multi-year deal.

Barkley is coming off a somewhat disappointing year where he posted 962 rushing yards and six touchdowns on a career-low 3.9 yards per carry in 14 games.

He once again dealt with instability at the quarterback position as well as injuries to his offensive line, and should he choose to leave New York, he’ll surely be looking for a situation where he doesn’t have to deal with that anymore after six years of chaos with the Giants.

The latter part of Raanan’s tweet is noteworthy as well and should make Giants fans happy, as he says the Cowboys and Eagles are most likely out of the running.

Barkley’s departure would hurt enough as it is, but to see him walk straight to one of the team’s two biggest rivals and run behind two of the league’s best offensive lines would hurt a lot.
