The Cleveland Cavaliers are already planning ahead for next season and beyond.
Darius Garland left a lot to be desired in a win-or-go-home game, and some have doubts about his fit next to Donovan Mitchell.
Should it come down to that, chances are that the front office would choose Mitchell over the former No. 5 pick, and rightfully so.
Notably, they still have Mitchell’s contract situation and potential extension at the top of the priority list.
And while all signs point toward the former Utah Jazz star leaving the team, a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic reveals that the organization is still fully confident about their ability to get him signed to a contract extension (via Anthony Chiang).
According to The Athletic’s reporting on Donovan Mitchell: “There is a growing sentiment around the league that the Cavaliers will be able to position themselves to receive his commitment for a lucrative contract extension that would keep him in Cleveland past his 30th birthday.” https://t.co/39acipopUD

Midway through the season, the Cavs talked about their optimism about a potential deal.
Then, the Louisville product sounded off the alarms by pumping the brakes on that statement and urging the fans not to get too carried away with that.
He hasn’t committed to the team for the long run, and even though he still has two years left on his contract, the word around the league is that he would much rather play somewhere else.
Should that be the case, the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Knicks have already been mentioned as potential suitors for his services.
But if the Cavs are right and Mitchell indeed signs a contract extension with them, perhaps they’ll be better off finding a trade suitor for Garland instead.
