The New England Patriots will have a new head coach on the sidelines in 2024 after more than 20 years with Bill Belichick.

Former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo became the head coach days after New England announced it had moved on from Belichick.

Legendary quarterback Tom Brady, who played with the Patriots from 2008 to 2015 with Mayo, provided a different perspective of the new head coach when speaking with “The Pat McAfee Show” on ESPN this week.

“Jerod Mayo was a great leader, a great captain, a great friend,” Brady said about Mayo. “… He’s got a great understanding of how things need to be done and I think Jerod does an incredible job relating to everybody in the locker room … and I think he’ll do a great job.”

Mayo was a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro during his tenure with Brady and the Patriots but quickly proved to be an adept coach when he joined Belichick’s staff in 2019 – four years after he retired from the league.

The Patriots’ defense remained one of the best units in the NFL under Belichick’s direction and with Mayo’s support with the linebackers, and now the ex-player has a chance to continue the legacy he witnessed firsthand both on the field and from the sideline.

Brady had a chance to see both as well in his final year with the Patriots in 2019 as this was Mayo’s first as an assistant coach before Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
