Dillon Brooks’ final season with the Memphis Grizzlies was a tough one.
Not only did the team underperform in the playoffs, but Brooks himself was also criticized for his performance.
He was also criticized for the way he publicly called out LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, just days before they eliminated his team.
But NBA legend Tracy McGrady admires the young star, who is now about to play for the Houston Rockets.
Speaking to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, McGrady praised the controversial star.
McGrady said Brooks’ trash talk was a very smart business move:
“If he doesn’t do some of the things that he did last year, going at LeBron who was the league’s best player, we’re not talking about Dillon Brooks, bro. No one is talking about Dillon Brooks, right?”
He added: “Y’all wouldn’t know who Dillon Brooks was if he wasn’t competing and going at LeBron that way so he did his job.”

McGrady may have a point.
Brooks called out James for being old and also said that he was hoping to face LA in the opening round of the playoffs.
At the time, he was actually in the midst of one of his worst seasons yet.
He was averaging 14.3 points a game, down from 18.4 the year before and 17.2 the year before that.
Yet, he has now earned a hefty contract from the Rockets.
Some say he got such a big payday from his new team because he is much more of a known commodity in the league.
And McGrady argues that he’s more known because of the way he created headlines with his comments.
Brooks angered some people, including James himself, when he said those things.
He also disappointed fans when he didn’t deliver in the playoffs.
But he is now getting paid more and could have an even bigger presence on the court with the Rockets.
McGrady might be right: this may have ultimately worked out well for Brooks.
