Trae Young is now admitting what many others already have: his partnership with Dejounte Murray just didn’t work.
Speaking on the “Podcast P” show with Paul George, per ClutchPoints, Young opened up about his time with Murray, who was recently sent to the New Orleans Pelicans after a couple of seasons with Young and the Atlanta Hawks.
Young said that he was very excited to play with Murray and expected big things but their styles just didn’t mesh and they weren’t able to win as much as they wanted.
“We’re not the first duo that couldn’t work and we’re not going to be the last,” Young said.
“Only bad part, we didn’t get to win as much as we wanted to… We’re not the first duo that couldn’t work and we’re not going to be the last… It sucks.”

Young sounded bummed by the failure of this partnership and said it “sucks” that they won’t continue to play together.
However, he did stress that they will remain lifelong friends and that they have a lot in common.
Hawks fans were thrilled when Murray joined Young during the summer of 2022.
They thought these two would formulate the best backcourt in the Eastern Conference and they expected them to make a mark in the playoffs.
Instead, the Hawks continued to struggle and although both Young and Murray played well individually, they didn’t find much success as a unit.
On paper, this duo seemed to make a lot of sense but that didn’t translate to the court and there was soon a lot of speculation about splitting Young and Murray up.
After two seasons, the Pelicans picked up Murray and now Young and the Hawks are moving on.
No one can fault Atlanta for trying to make this work but it just didn’t pan out as expected.
Everyone, including Young, is accepting that now.
